About the challenge

What is the Summer Steps challenge?

expand_more expand_less

The average adult takes 7.5 million breaths a year, and we’re aiming to take a collective 7.5 million steps this summer from 25th July - 31st August.

Taking on our Summer Steps challenge is really flexible and a great way to get active in a way that works best for you. Choose your own way to get your steps in between 25th July and 31st August. It’s that simple.

It’s the perfect reason to get out in the sunshine and spend time with family and friends, all while raising
money and making a difference.

Just remember to track your steps so that we can include them in our combined total and help us reach our 7.5 million steps target!

How do I register?

expand_more expand_less

You can register here. It only takes two minutes to sign up and it’s completely FREE!

Can I take part as a group?

expand_more expand_less

Yes, definitely! We'd encourage you to have one fundraising page for your group and track your combined total of steps and fundraising on there.

Not sure what to do? Here are some ideas!

expand_more expand_less
1. Steps a day challenge
Challenge yourself to walk a number of steps a day for a month (or more!).

2. Social walk

Get everyone involved - walk with friends or family and end your route at a nice coffee shop or pub for a well-deserved treat!

3. Dog walk

Turn your daily dog walk into steps that count! If you don't have a dog, why not volunteer to walk someone else's?

4. Stair climb

An easy way to factor your challenge into your daily routine.

5. Trek

Embrace the challenge and use the opportunity to take on a trek, like the Three Peaks Challenge or the Hadrian's Wall Path.

Tracking my steps

How do I add my steps manually?

expand_more expand_less

You don't need to use a fitness app to join our Summer Steps challenge, you can track your steps manually. To do this:

  1. Log in if you aren’t already logged in.
  2. Click on the profile icon in the top right corner which will bring up a list of options
  3. Select My Fitness Activity from the list.
  4. Scroll down on this page to the part that says ‘Add Activity’.
  5. Here you can add the date, distance and number of steps you did. Be sure to select the Activity Type, usually walking. You don’t have to add the distance if you don’t know it.
  6. Click Save Changes.

Please note that your steps may take a while to show on your page. Please allow 24hrs for your activity to update.

We've also shared a screen recording below to take you through the steps on both mobile or desktop.

If you have any problems just drop us an email (community@asthmaandlung.org.uk) and we can have a look for you.

I'm measuring my walk in miles/kilometers - how can I work out my step count?

expand_more expand_less

That's no problem! You can easily convert your miles/km into steps online and then add the steps to your activity tracker. For reference, 5000 steps is around 2.5 miles.

If you're still not sure just let us know,  (community@asthmaandlung.org.uk) and we can work it out for you!

Fundraising

Is there a minimum amount to be raised?

expand_more expand_less

There’s no fundraising target for the Summer Steps Challenge, we just ask you to raise as much as you can to support our life-saving work.

  • £30 could help nearly 18 people to raise their voices and call on the government to improve respiratory care through one of our campaigns.
  • £49 could help us to answer one enquiry through our Helpline.
  • £344 could go towards a day of the best research.

Everyone that raises over £100 will get a free Asthma + Lung UK tote bag!

Please note: Your fundraising page will automatically set £100 as a minimum fundraising target, however, there is no pressure to reach this.

How do I start fundraising?

expand_more expand_less

Your online fundraising page will be created as part of the sign-up process. All the amazing donations you receive will then be sent to Asthma + Lung UK automatically, so all you need to do is get sharing your page and spread the word!

Do I have to fundraise online?

expand_more expand_less

Online fundraising is by far the easiest way! If you do receive any donations offline, you can simply make a donation to your page for that amount with a credit card. Don’t forget, if you’re paying money into your own page you can’t claim Gift Aid.

Please contact community@asthmaandlung.org.uk if you need to pay anything in by another method.

How long do I have to fundraise?

expand_more expand_less

Your online fundraising pages will remain open so you can continue to collect donations after you complete the Summer Steps challenge.

Please finalise your fundraising totals by 15 September as we will be sending fundraising certificates, along with tote bags for those who raise over £100, from this date.
