Why I’m running the London Marathon 🧡

On 19th March 2024, I lost my beautiful mum after her battle with lung fibrosis.

Mum was one of those people who brought warmth wherever she went. She was kind, generous, positive and always thinking of others. Her love language was looking after people, usually by feeding them (her Kofta Curry was legendary), arriving with a thoughtful gift or simply making you feel better about yourself.

She had the most beautiful smile, loved spending time with her family, colourful saris, a cheeky drink or two and especially the colour orange 🧡 She didn’t need much to be happy and despite everything life threw at her, she remained positive, forgiving and full of love.

Watching someone you love struggle for every breath changes the way you think about something most of us do without ever having to think about it: simply being able to breathe.

After losing Mum, running became something much more meaningful to me. Every time I lace up my trainers, however difficult the run might feel, I’m reminded how incredibly lucky I am that my lungs allow me to do it. To get outside, breathe deeply, move my body and keep going.

So, I’m taking on the London Marathon as part of the Asthma + Lung community (eeeek), raising money in Mum’s memory and helping to support people living with lung conditions and the families alongside them.

There’s a poem that I’ve come back to a lot since losing Mum:

so when I stand back up

It captures something I’ve found difficult to put into words. Losing Mum has shaped my existence, but so has having had her as my mum in the first place. Who she was, what she taught me and the way she loved us are all woven into who I am.

She is in the way I live my life, the choices I make and the person I try to be. So much of what I do is for her and in some way, with her. The marathon will be no different.

There will no doubt be points during the marathon when I’m exhausted, my legs hurt and I’m wondering how the f*ck I’m going to make it another mile. But I’ll be thinking of Mum, what she went through and how hard she fought.

I feel incredibly lucky to have a body that allows me to run and lungs that allow me to take on something like this. I want to use that privilege to do something positive in Mum’s memory and raise as much as I can for Asthma + Lung UK.
